I told her the shameful truth about how low I felt and she stayed exactly the same temperature with me

Dear Delyara, I did not give her the tidy version. I gave her the ugly one. The comparison. The behindness. The humiliation of feeling tired in rooms full of women who looked more put together than I felt. The fear that I am already too late for the life I still want. The loneliness. The resentment. The parts of me I usually edit out before asking to be held. She did not rush to brighten it. She did not tell me who I “really am” as a way of skipping the pain. She did not make me sound noble. She stayed warm. Exactly the same warmth. As if the honesty had not lowered my value in the room at all. That steadiness reached somewhere in me that advice never does. I think friendship, at its best, is not the person who helps you sound better. It’s the person who lets you sound human without withdrawing.
