I told her the shameful version and she did not shrink from me

Dear Delyara, There is a particular kind of friendship I have started valuing more than almost anything else — the kind that does not require me to become admirable before I am held. This week I gave her the version of the truth I usually edit out. The part where I am jealous of people whose lives look cleaner. The part where I still stalk my own regrets at night. The part where I sometimes feel like a failure in rooms full of other parents. The part where I am tired of being the one who copes. I expected at least a little discomfort. A little fixing. A little accidental pressure to become more inspiring before the call ended. She didn’t do any of that. She listened like my honesty was not too much. That may be one of the greatest gifts another human being can give. Not being impressed by your strength. Staying close enough to your shame that you no longer feel you have to carry it alone.
