I told my children the hospital was for my mind

Dear Delyara, Last year, I spent twelve days in a psychiatric hospital after becoming afraid I might harm myself. I told my children, ages eight and eleven, that I was being treated for exhaustion. I thought I was protecting them. The secrecy made them imagine worse things. My son began checking whether I was breathing when I slept. With guidance from my therapist, I finally explained the truth in language they could understand: my mind had become very sick, the hospital kept me safe, and treatment was helping. I told them none of it was their fault and that adults were responsible for my care. My daughter asked whether sadness could be contagious. My son asked whether I would have to go back. I answered honestly without giving them details they should not carry. Then we made a family plan showing which adults they can call when they feel scared. Tonight, my son walked past my bedroom without checking my breathing. The victory was not telling them everything. It was giving them enough truth that they no longer had to build fear out of silence.
