I told the dentist I was frightened instead of pretending I was fine
Dear Delyara, I always pretend. Smile, joke, grip the chair, get through it, go home shaking and call it success. This time I said the simple embarrassing truth: “I’m really nervous.” The whole appointment changed after that. The dentist slowed down, explained things more clearly, paused when I needed a second, and treated me like a human being instead of a polite machine. I came out thinking how many years I’ve spent suffering unnecessarily because I thought being a good adult meant looking unafraid. Maybe part of health is telling the truth in time for the care to meet it properly.
