I told the embarrassing truth and she didn’t make me feel smaller for it

Dear Delyara, I almost didn’t tell her. Because it wasn’t the sort of truth that makes you look strong. It was the embarrassing sort — that I had been comparing myself, spiralling a bit, feeling behind in life, feeling older than I wanted to feel, resentful of people who seemed lighter, more successful, more certain. I was ashamed even hearing it in my own voice. But I said it anyway. And she didn’t brighten it. She didn’t shame it. She didn’t use it as a chance to teach me a lesson or tell me how common it is in a tone that would flatten the very specific pain of it. She listened like the truth did not make me less worthy of closeness. That’s what I mean by friendship now. Not people who love the polished version. People who let the humiliating truth stay in the room without changing how they hold you inside it.
