I told the hairdresser I did not want my gray covered

Dear Delyara, I began coloring my hair at thirty-one because the first gray strands frightened me. By forty-eight, appointments were every three weeks because I could not tolerate the roots showing. My mother had spent her life calling gray hair “giving up,” and somehow her voice moved into every mirror. Last year, I became tired of organizing my calendar around hiding my own aging. My stylist helped blend the color gradually rather than forcing one dramatic transition. Today, she cut the final dyed ends away. My hair is silver at the temples, dark at the back, uneven and completely mine. I stared at myself and saw my mother for a moment. That used to terrify me because she died young. Then I remembered I have already lived seven years longer than she did. Self-esteem today meant letting age appear on me instead of treating every visible year as damage needing correction.
