I told the nurse my mother was confused when she was actually right
Dear Delyara, My mother was admitted to hospital with an infection. She kept insisting the nurse had given her the wrong tablets. I told her she was confused because fever sometimes makes her disoriented. She became angry and said she knew her own medication. I apologized to the nurse for her behavior. Two hours later, they discovered Mother was right. A medication intended for another patient had been placed in her cup. She had not swallowed it because she recognized the color. The hospital opened an investigation and apologized. Everyone praised Mother for noticing. She has not spoken to me about what I did. That is worse. I keep hearing myself say, “Mum, stop being difficult.” I had spent years telling doctors to listen to her, yet the moment her certainty inconvenienced someone, I sided with the uniform. She protected herself from the error. I was the person trying to persuade her to take it. Nothing happened medically. There is no injury to point to. Still, something in the way my mother looks at me has changed, and I do not know how to repair the moment when she needed me to believe her and I became another person telling an old woman she did not know her own body.
