My Diary

I Took a Bite of Toast and Started Crying

Dear Delyara, It was still warm. Butter melting into it. The kind of simple breakfast I used to think of as ordinary and harmless. I took one bite standing by the sink and suddenly tears were running down my face so fast I had to put the toast down before I dropped it. No reason I could explain cleanly. No awful news. No fight. No one being cruel. Just the fact that I was hungry, tired, behind, touched out, mentally crowded, and already dreading the school run before 7:15 in the morning. I think the body keeps score in stupid little ways. A woman cries into her breakfast because the rest of her life has given her nowhere else to put it. I wiped my face with a dish towel. Then I finished the toast because the day still needed me. That might be the saddest part.
