I Took Off My Earrings Before Dinner and Felt the Day Slide Down a Little
Dear Delyara, It’s strange what the body chooses as the official end of effort. Not the workday. Not the drive home. Not the children’s homework being done. Not even dinner starting. For me, today, it was earrings. I stood in the kitchen, one pan on the stove, one child asking about tomorrow, the other looking for a charger, and I reached up and removed my earrings as if my skin itself had decided it no longer wished to participate in presentation. The relief was immediate and far larger than the object deserved. I think women carry more physical performance than they realise. Tiny discomforts. Tightness. Pressure. The little held-together things of public life. Then they remove one thing — shoes, bra, earrings, waistband, coat — and the body says, thank you, louder than words could. I put the earrings in the small bowl by the kettle and felt a kind of tenderness toward myself. Not glamorous. Just tired and real.
