Other VictoriesOvercoming Fear

I took the driving test after failing it five times

Dear Delyara, I failed my driving test five times. After the third, anxiety became worse than my actual driving. By the fifth, I would shake before turning the key. I stopped trying for four years. When my mother became less mobile, I decided I wanted another attempt. I found an instructor who worked with anxious learners and spent months rebuilding skills without constantly rehearsing failure. Today, I passed. Two minor faults. When the examiner said the words, I asked him to repeat them. I drove home legally for the first time with my instructor beside me. Mum was waiting outside holding a homemade sign that said ABOUT TIME. I laughed until I cried. Overcoming fear did not erase five failures. It turned them into five things that happened before the sixth test instead of five pieces of evidence about what I would never manage.
