I walked into the supermarket without oxygen
Dear Delyara, After severe pneumonia, I spent eleven months dependent on portable oxygen. I learned to plan every outing around battery life, tubing, and whether people would stare. Pulmonary rehabilitation began with breathing exercises in a chair, then short walks, then climbing one step repeatedly while a nurse monitored my oxygen level. Last month, my consultant approved brief periods without the equipment. Today, I entered the supermarket carrying only a shopping bag. I walked slowly, used the trolley for support, and stopped near the frozen foods when my chest tightened. The reading on my finger monitor remained safe. I bought bread, milk, and a bunch of yellow tulips I had not planned to buy. Outside, I cried beside the trolley bay. Recovery did not look like running or returning to the person I was before illness. It looked like crossing three aisles while breathing air my body managed without a machine. I kept the oxygen cylinder in the car. Knowing it was there helped. Not needing it for twenty-two minutes helped more.
