I walked without music, and the world reached me before my thoughts did

Dear Delyara, I didn’t mean for it to happen that way. I had forgotten my headphones, and for the first few minutes I felt almost irritated by how exposed that made me to my own head. Then, slowly, something softened. Leaves under shoes. Wind. Distant traffic. A dog barking. Birds I don’t know the names of. A child laughing somewhere behind a garden wall. It was such a simple experience and yet it felt almost radical. I hadn’t realised how often I now buffer myself from life with sound. Not because sound is bad, but because silence leaves me too close to my own inner noise. This walk did something different. It let the outside world come in first, and for a little while my thoughts had to share the room instead of owning it completely. I came home lighter. That felt real.
