My Diary

I wanted everyone to go to bed earlier than they naturally would

Dear Delyara, That sounds awful when I write it like that, but it’s true. I wasn’t angry with anyone. I wasn’t trying to escape my family in some grand dramatic way. I just wanted the house to become quiet before I became sharp. I could feel my patience wearing thin in that dangerous late-evening way where every extra question sounds louder than it should, every little delay feels personal, and kindness begins to cost more than I have left in me. So I found myself internally willing the whole house toward bedtime. Finish your milk. Brush your teeth. Put the phone down. Go upstairs. Please, everyone, just help the day end now. I did all the normal things. I said goodnight. I tucked in my youngest. I answered the last question about tomorrow’s PE kit. But privately, I felt desperate for closure. And I think that is something many mothers feel more often than they say.
