My Diary
I wanted somebody else to hear the washing machine beep first
Dear Delyara, That tiny sound has become a symbol. It goes off, and it may as well be saying my name. Not because nobody else can hear it, but because in this house I am still the one most likely to translate that sound into action. Hang it up before it smells. Don’t forget. Keep tomorrow from getting harder than it needs to be. I was halfway through a chapter of a book when it beeped tonight, and I felt a level of irritation far beyond what an appliance deserves. Maybe that’s because the beep wasn’t only a beep. It was one more reminder that I am the bridge between unfinished tasks and finished ones in this house. I put the bookmark in and got up. Of course I did.
