My Diary

I wanted the evening to stop needing so much from me

Dear Delyara, It wasn’t one big thing. That’s the problem. If it were one big thing, I could point to it. Instead it was ten little things — bedtime, forms, laundry, tomorrow, one child still emotional, my husband still practical, the dog, the kitchen, the low milk, the unanswered text. It’s the accumulation that empties me. The way ordinary life arrives in such small valid pieces that no individual part seems dramatic enough to justify how overused I feel by the end of it. I was still kind. I just had to manufacture more of it than usual.
