My Diary

I wanted to be asked how my day was and then not interrupted halfway through the answer

Dear Delyara, It seems like such a modest wish. And yet, I can’t remember the last time I answered that question fully without someone checking their phone, changing the subject, solving it too early, or another practical thing walking into the room before I’d finished saying what I meant. This evening my husband asked how work was, and before I got to the part that actually mattered, one of the children came in asking about tomorrow, and then the dog started scratching at the door, and then by the time everyone settled again the moment had gone stale. So I said, “It was fine.” Which was not the truth and not exactly a lie. I’m tired of how many real things in adult life vanish because the timing around them is never quite soft enough.
