My Diary

I wanted to be held in the ordinary way, not the dramatic way

Dear Delyara, I think there is a misconception that when a person feels low, what they want must be big. A big talk. A big comfort. A big breakthrough. A big gesture. That’s not what I wanted tonight. I wanted someone to rinse the cup. To ask with their tone instead of with a heavy question. To lower the volume in the room because they sensed I couldn’t take much more of anything. To hand me a blanket and keep speaking normally, as if my softness didn’t need to become a whole event before it could be respected. That is the kind of care I ache for most now. Not dramatic rescue. Ordinary tenderness. Maybe that is what adulthood does. It teaches you that the deepest forms of love are often logistical, tonal, atmospheric. Not grand enough to tell as stories, but exactly large enough to change whether a night hurts more than it needs to.
