I wanted to be praised for closing the kitchen, even though nobody sees that as a thing
Dear Delyara, It takes energy to notice what still needs doing, wipe the sides, pack the lunches, check the dishwasher, refill the water bottles, cover the leftovers, remember tomorrow’s breakfast situation, and turn the whole room from daytime survival zone into something the next morning can begin from without too much damage. It is not magic. It is labour. Repetitive, unglamorous, often lonely labour. Last night I did all of it while everyone else slowly peeled away into their softer evening selves. I don’t need applause exactly. I just think there are thousands of women every night performing the invisible ritual of resetting a household while nobody names it as a meaningful act. It is meaningful. It is one of the ways a home continues without collapse. So yes, I closed the kitchen. Beautifully, actually.
