My Diary

I wanted to be spoken to like I had not been carrying things all day

Dear Delyara, No clipped tone. No hurried question. No immediate practical demand the second I walked through the door. I wanted one soft entry into the evening. That’s all. Instead the usual things happened. Mum, where is this? Can you sign that? Did you remember Friday? What’s for dinner? Have you seen my—? I know this is family life. I know none of it is malicious. But some evenings I feel the absence of softness like thirst. I think women carry more badly timed contact than people acknowledge. That’s why I’m writing this down. Not because it was a terrible day. Because the timing of ordinary needs can still bruise a tired person.
