My Diary

I wanted to drink coffee before becoming useful

Dear Delyara, Just one hot cup, finished while sitting down, before the day started asking anything serious from me. But of course the morning had other ideas. One child had lost a shoe, the other needed a form signed, the dog needed to go out, someone had left a wet towel on the floor, and by the time I got back to the mug it was no longer coffee so much as a brown memory of coffee. I drank it anyway. I nearly always do. I think what upset me was not the drink itself. It was how quickly my own basic comfort still gets moved to the edge of the day by everyone else’s urgency. My mornings begin in service so often that even wanting ten calm minutes can feel extravagant. It shouldn’t.
