My Diary

I wanted to stop being impressive for a day

Dear Delyara, Not impressive in a glamorous way. Impressive in the exhausting adult way. Capable. Reliable. Measured. Kind under pressure. Able to cope. Able to continue. Able to make things work despite how I feel. Tonight I am tired of all of that. I don’t want to be strong in ways people admire. I want to be ordinary enough to rest without turning it into a statement about my worth. I think I’ve lived too long around the idea that resilience is the most respectable thing about a person. Some nights I want tenderness more than respect.
