I was forced out of work slowly enough that people could still pretend I had chosen to go

Dear Delyara, If someone sacks you openly, at least there is honesty. But when they want you gone without admitting it, they become careful. They cut your hours. Leave you out. Stop trusting you with things they once did. Speak to you in that polite managerial voice that sounds supportive and feels like erasure. They make your work life colder one degree at a time until leaving starts to look like self-respect rather than the outcome of being pushed. That is what happened to me. I could feel it long before I could prove it. That’s the cruel part. Being forced to live inside something that is hurting you while still having to explain yourself to people who only recognise pain when it arrives with louder evidence. I went home from that job feeling smaller and more confused every week. Not because I wasn’t capable. Because I was being professionally reduced in a tone civil enough to make the whole thing harder to name.
