My Diary

I washed the coffee cup my husband left beside the sink

Dear Delyara, My husband died unexpectedly at work. On the morning he left, he drank half a cup of coffee and placed it beside the sink instead of inside the dishwasher, as usual. I left it there for three months. The coffee dried into a dark ring. Dust gathered on the handle. My sister stopped mentioning it after I shouted at her for offering to wash it. Today, I did it myself. I stood at the sink with warm water running and held the cup for almost ten minutes before putting soap on the sponge. The dried coffee came away immediately. That offended me. Three months of protecting his final mess, and it disappeared in seconds. I kept rinsing after the cup was already clean. Then I drank coffee from it. It tasted normal. I do not know what I expected. Maybe some trace of him. Maybe punishment. Instead, I got a clean cup and an ordinary drink. Grief makes you assign enormous responsibilities to objects. This cup had been guarding our last morning because I was afraid nobody else was. Tonight, it is in the cupboard with all the others. I keep opening the door to check that I can still tell which one it is.
