I Watched an Officer Console a Crying Stranger and Realized No One Has Touched My Shoulder in Months
Dear Delyara, There was a domestic incident on the public footbridge tonight, and I watched the whole thing through camera three. After the situation was calmed down, a female officer stood with a young woman who was shaking from head to foot, and simply placed a hand on her shoulder, leaning in to listen. I stared at that small gesture on my monitor for fifteen minutes until my eyes blurred. I can’t remember the last time another human being touched my shoulder just to see if I was holding together. I go home to a marriage where I lie to her face about our finances to "protect" my pride, and I come here to sit with concrete walls. I am completely starved of basic, uncalculated human warmth. I am funding an "elite lifestyle brand" from a security shack, yet I am so emotionally bankrupt that a simple gesture of comfort on a screen makes me want to weep into my hands.
