My Diary

I watched my daughter re-read her presentation out loud when she thought no one was listening

Dear Delyara, I was in the hallway with a basket of clean washing, and I stopped without meaning to. She was in her room, reading it over in that determined nervous voice children use when they want to do well and are terrified of looking foolish in front of other people. She changed one sentence, started again, adjusted the page, tried another line. I didn’t interrupt. I just stood there feeling the ache of loving someone who is becoming more and more of a person in rooms you are no longer invited into directly. Motherhood at this stage is so often hallway love. Doorway love. Car-park love. Lunchbox love. Quiet love that watches growth happen and cannot control it without damaging it. I carried the washing away and said nothing. But that moment stayed with me all evening.
