I went back to the gym after the operation and didn’t hate my body there

Dear Delyara, That was the part I was most afraid of, if I’m honest. Not the movement itself. The comparison. The mirrors. The old body-memory of what I used to lift, how I used to look, how I used to feel when exercise meant strength and not rehabilitation. I had built this moment up so much in my head that the actual return felt almost ceremonial. I went on Tuesday morning. I stayed only forty minutes. I walked more than I trained. I used lighter weights than I would once have considered embarrassing. And I did not hate myself. That matters more than any performance goal right now. I stood inside a room where my old standards could have attacked me and instead I felt something gentler: respect for a body that is trying. I came home tired, but not defeated. That is a very different kind of victory.
