I went to the follow-up appointment without taking someone with me for the first time

Dear Delyara, For nearly a year after my diagnosis, I couldn’t do hospital appointments alone. Even when the news was likely routine, my body still associated those corridors with bad possibilities, and I needed somebody beside me just to keep the emotional ground steady enough to walk on. This week I went alone. I drove there with shaky hands, sat in the waiting room with my coat folded over my lap, and waited without texting anybody for reassurance every five minutes. The appointment was ordinary. That was the point. I stayed inside ordinary without borrowing someone else’s nervous system to do it. When I walked back to the car afterward, I cried a little, not because I was upset, but because I realized recovery had happened quietly enough that I hadn’t noticed how far I’d come.
