Other VictoriesOvercoming Fear
I went to the parents’ evening alone and didn’t feel smaller because of it
Dear Delyara, Since the divorce, events like that have carried a strange kind of exposure. Other couples arriving together, families in their familiar formations, teachers saying “Mum or Dad?” in that brief uncertain tone. It shouldn’t matter as much as it does, but it does. This week I went alone, sat through every appointment, asked proper questions, took notes, and came home without that old collapse of feeling “less than” because I had walked in by myself. I’m learning that fear often attaches itself to situations where identity feels publicly visible. That’s why this mattered. I didn’t just attend the evening. I kept my dignity intact inside it.
