My Diary

I went upstairs for lip balm and came down with a basket of washing instead

Dear Delyara, That is how easily I disappear into function. I genuinely went upstairs for one small thing that belonged to me. On the landing I saw the basket. Then I noticed the shirts on the radiator. Then I remembered the towels in the bathroom. By the time I got back down, my hands were full of everyone else’s fabric and I still didn’t have the lip balm. Half an hour later I found it in my dressing gown pocket. I laughed because the whole scene felt too honest to deny. This is how it happens. Not through martyrdom. Through drift. My attention gets hooked by what the household needs and pulled away from what I originally went to retrieve for myself. I don’t think I’m the only woman living like this. I think a lot of us are slowly being redirected all day long.
