I wore my natural hair to the interview

Dear Delyara, For every important interview I had ever attended, I straightened my hair. Teachers, relatives, and former managers had all taught me that natural hair looked less professional, though they rarely said those exact words. Before this interview, I made the usual appointment, then canceled it. I wore my curls as they grow from my head. In the parking lot, I almost turned around. I could hear every warning about looking polished and not giving people a reason to judge me. I went inside anyway. During the interview, the director complimented my experience, not my appearance. I received the offer this morning. The job matters, but another moment mattered more. My thirteen-year-old daughter saw me preparing and asked whether she could wear her natural hair for her school presentation too. I told her yes before fear could become advice. Self-esteem did not arrive as confidence. It arrived as the decision not to pass my own learned shame into the hands of a child watching how I entered the room.
