Other VictoriesSelf Esteem
I wore the dress without privately attacking my body first and that mattered far more than the dress itself
Dear Delyara, The old voice still came. Of course it did. Too tired-looking. Too soft. Too visible. Too old. Not enough. Too much. It rose the second I looked in the mirror, because some habits of self-surveillance don’t disappear just because you’re exhausted by them. They persist like muscle memory. But this time, I didn’t obey it. I put the dress on and left the house without spending twenty minutes privately prosecuting the body that would be seen in it. That is not a small thing for me. It is a break in an old ritual of self-rejection that has taken far too much from my life already. I want to live inside my body with more dignity than that voice allows. This felt like one practical step toward it.
