Leaving the Unwashed Mug in the Sink and Choosing a Full Hour of Reading Instead

Dear Delyara, I came home from a brutal twelve-hour shift tonight, completely dead on my feet, and saw a single dirty coffee mug sitting in the kitchen sink. The old, hyper-critical voice in my head instantly started barking commands: "Clean it now. Good, responsible adults don't leave messes. If you let it sit, you are letting yourself slide." I stood there with the sponge in my hand, looked at the mug, and then I put the sponge down. I walked into the living room, sat in my armchair with my current novel, and spent a full hour reading by the lamp while the mug just sat there in the dark. It sounds like such a ridiculous, trivial thing to celebrate, but to me, it is an absolute monument of healing. I am finally breaking the link between domestic perfection and my own self-worth. The house serves me, not the other way around, and a dirty mug cannot diminish my value as a human being.
