Money has made me smaller in ways I don’t know how to admit without sounding weak

Dear Delyara, It is not only stress. It is reduction. The way I now cut from myself first. The speed with which I hear cost before comfort. The shame attached to wanting anything not strictly necessary. The private fear at ordinary things like school trips, birthdays, a new tyre, a decent bra, a medical appointment, a child needing shoes without warning. Money has changed how I stand in shops. How I move through the week. How quickly my mood can turn brittle over one unexpected expense. It has made me feel less free, less generous, less emotionally spacious inside my own life. I don’t think people talk honestly enough about what prolonged financial pressure does to dignity. It does not just limit options. It alters the self. And I can feel that alteration in me now more than I want to.
