Money Has Made Too Many Ordinary Moments In My Home Feel Slightly Unsafe

Dear Delyara, A child asking for school money. A broken appliance. A shopping list. A sound from the car. A birthday invite. A prescription. Fruit. Petrol. Shoes. These things should not feel threatening. And yet there is now a quiet charge attached to so many ordinary parts of family life that the whole emotional atmosphere of the house changes around them before a word is even spoken. That’s the part that breaks my heart. Not only the spending. The emotional contamination. I don’t want normal needs to arrive in my body as fear. But too often they do. Money has taught me to hear “We need…” as if it might be the beginning of danger. That is not how I want to mother. Or live. Still, some weeks, it is the truth.
