Money still makes me feel small
Dear Delyara, That’s the part that gets under my skin. I can deal with practical pressure. I can make plans, cut back, adjust, push things around, postpone what can wait. What I hate is the emotional shrinking that comes with it. One payment at the wrong time, one repair, one school cost, and suddenly I feel less solid in myself, less generous, less relaxed, less like the woman I would be if I had room to breathe. I know money is not character. I know that. Still, when it gets tight, part of me starts feeling like I’ve failed in some deeper way that has nothing to do with numbers and everything to do with safety and shame and adulthood. That reaction is old. And I’m tired of how quickly it still arrives.
