The BondFriendship

My best friend told my ex-wife something I said in confidence

Dear Delyara, After my divorce, I told my closest friend that part of me regretted leaving. I said it privately, late at night, after too much wine and one terrible week. He later told my ex-wife because he thought we might reconcile. She called me asking whether I wanted to come home. I did not. I had been grieving, not reversing the decision. Now she believes I have been playing with her emotions. My friend says he was trying to help two people who obviously still love each other. I cannot make him understand that love was never the only problem. He took a vulnerable sentence and turned it into action without asking me. We have known each other twenty-four years. He was best man at our wedding. Perhaps that history made him think the marriage partly belonged to him too. I have stopped telling him anything personal. He notices. Yesterday, he said, “Are you really going to throw away our friendship over one mistake?” I wanted to say trust is rarely destroyed by the number of mistakes. Sometimes it is one sentence delivered to exactly the wrong person.
