The SilenceTrauma

My Body Flinched Before My Mind Understood

Dear Delyara, Something happened today that reminded me trauma lives in the body in ways words often fail to catch up with. A sound. That’s all it was. A sudden loud sound in the wrong room at the wrong moment, and my whole body reacted before I even knew what I was reacting to. My shoulders tightened, my breath changed, and for a few seconds I wasn’t where I actually was. I was somewhere older. That feeling is hard to explain to people who think trauma is only memory. Sometimes it’s not a memory. Sometimes it’s a reflex with history inside it.
