My Body Hears Threat in Ordinary Delays
Dear Delyara, A child takes too long to answer from the next room. My husband doesn’t text back for two hours. A bill payment doesn’t go through on the first try. The doctor’s office puts me on hold. A teacher writes, “Can you call me when you get a chance?” My body doesn’t hear delay. It hears danger. That’s what makes anxiety so humiliating. It takes regular adult life and floods it with the emotional chemistry of emergency before facts have even sat down in the room. By the time the truth arrives, I’ve often already lived through a whole private catastrophe. That costs energy. Appetite. patience. Dignity. And it happens so quietly no one knows except me. I am tired of living in a body that cannot tell the difference between later and never.
