The SilenceTrauma
My Body Still Becomes Smaller Before My Mind Has Decided Whether the Room Is Safe
Dear Delyara, That is trauma in ordinary clothes. Not always flashbacks. Not always big events. Sometimes just a tone, a doorway, a certain kind of male silence, a certain kind of authority, the wrong shape of tension in a room — and something in me reacts first. I become careful. Polite. Strategic. Less fully present. More observant. More willing to shape myself around the mood than occupy my own real size in it. By the time my thinking mind catches up and says, “You are safe,” the body has already done half the old work. That is exhausting. And invisible. Which makes it harder to explain and harder to forgive in myself too. I know more than I used to. My body still obeys old knowledge too quickly.
