My Child’s Water Bottle Leaked in the School Bag Again

Dear Delyara, I knew before I opened the zip. That damp smell. That slight heaviness in the bag. The shape of another small evening problem waiting in the hallway with all the confidence of something that knew it would become mine eventually anyway. The worksheets were wet at the corners. The lunchbox needed wiping. The bottle lid had not closed properly. Again. None of this was important in the grand sense. Still, I could feel how quickly these little domestic accidents climb into an already full nervous system and begin making emotional claims far beyond their size. I wiped everything down and laid the papers out to dry on the table. While I did, I kept thinking how many mothers are quietly spending their evenings rescuing paper from children’s carelessness and hiding how much the repetition sometimes hurts. Not because the children are bad. Because the mother is tired.
