My children are grown, my marriage is over, and I have nowhere I am expected to be
Dear Delyara, For twenty-seven years, my life had roles with names: wife, mother, school volunteer, caregiver to my own mother. My mother died. My children moved out. My husband and I divorced last year. I am fifty-four and suddenly nobody needs to know when I will be home. People call this freedom. I walk through grocery stores buying food for one and feel like I have been erased from an organization without receiving redundancy papers. I signed up for yoga. I hated it. I volunteered at a museum and spent the whole shift wondering whether I was supposed to become “museum volunteer woman” now. My daughter says I should travel. She means well. I do not need another destination. I need some understanding of who travels there. Last Sunday, no one called all day. At nine, I realized I had not spoken aloud since Saturday. I said my own name in the kitchen just to hear somebody use it.
