My Diary

My daughter asked if tomorrow was a happy day or a busy day

Dear Delyara, That was her exact phrase. Happy day or busy day. I was writing things in the calendar and she was colouring beside me, and she looked up and asked it so sincerely that I had to stop for a moment. I told her it would probably be a busy day, but we could still make part of it nice. She nodded as if this was perfectly sensible information and went back to colouring. I’ve been thinking about it ever since. Children understand more than we think. She already knows that days have textures, and that busyness can take up space where happiness might otherwise breathe. It made me sad, not because she asked, but because I knew exactly why she asked. She’s living inside our rhythm with us. Tonight I packed the bags a little earlier than usual. I wanted to make room for “nice.”
