My daughter called me Dad in front of her friends for the first time
Dear Delyara, I became my daughter’s stepfather when she was four. She has always called me Michael because her biological father remains part of her life. I never asked for another name. Today, she is seventeen, and I drove her and three friends home from a school event. As she climbed out of the car, she said, “Thanks, Dad,” without pausing. Then she kept talking to her friends and walked away. I sat there gripping the steering wheel. She had called me Dad a few times jokingly at home, usually when she wanted something. Never like this. Never casually, as though the word had been living in her mouth for years and simply came out. Her mother asked why I was crying when I entered the house. I told her. She smiled and said not to make a big thing of it because our daughter might become self-conscious. So I am making a small thing of it here instead. I have attended parent evenings, sat outside emergency rooms, taught her to drive, been told “you’re not my real dad” during two arguments, and never wanted to compete with the father she already had. Tonight, one ordinary word made room for me without removing anyone else.
