My daughter changed her voice when she saw my face

Dear Delyara, She came into the room quickly, ready to ask for something in the usual child way, looked at me properly, and softened immediately. Sat down instead of shouting from the door. Put a hand on my arm before she spoke. Changed the whole energy of herself because she had seen something tired in me. That kind of being noticed is so rare in adult life that it can feel overwhelming. I think that’s why motherhood hits like that sometimes. We give so much tone, so much adjustment, so much emotional reading to our children, and when some of it comes back in a small pure form, it feels like being loved in a language our bodies recognise instantly. I nearly cried over a child simply lowering her voice. That’s how much it mattered.
