My daughter fell while I was looking at my phone

Dear Delyara, My daughter is three. Last Saturday, we were at the playground, and I looked down to answer a work message. During those few seconds, she climbed higher than she ever had before and fell. She broke her arm. The doctor said children fall, that the fracture will heal, that I should not blame myself. But I saw the moment. I heard the sound her body made when it hit the ground. I remember the glowing screen in my hand. My husband keeps telling people it was an accident. I say the same thing, but inside I repeat a different sentence: I chose a message over watching her. She has a purple cast now and thinks it is exciting. She asks everyone to sign it. At bedtime, she says, “Mommy, don’t let me fall,” and I feel sick. I have deleted the work app from my phone. It does not change what happened. Her bone is healing in the shape of an accident my guilt refuses to call accidental.
