My daughter gave me back the spare key
Dear Delyara, I drank for twenty-six years. During the last five, my daughter stopped allowing me inside her home unless someone else was present. I entered treatment after waking in a police cell with no memory of how I got there. Recovery was not one decision. It was hundreds. Medical detox. Residential treatment. Meetings. Therapy. Medication. Calling someone before buying a bottle. Apologizing without demanding forgiveness. Accepting that trust would return more slowly than sobriety. Last Sunday, I reached two years without alcohol. My daughter came to my flat with a small envelope. Inside was the spare key to her house. She said, “You can keep this again.” I did not use it. I held it all evening. That key is not proof that everything is repaired. Some things may never be. But for years, my daughter needed a locked door between us to feel safe. Now she believes I can carry a way into her home without using it to hurt her. I have never received a greater honor.
