My daughter’s drawing was on the table and I almost put a plate on top of it
Dear Delyara, I stopped just in time. It was a drawing of our house, me with impossible eyelashes, and some version of the sky that was mostly pink and clearly more hopeful than the actual weather. She had left it there for me to see. I know that because she asked later if I had “noticed it properly.” That question broke my heart a little. I had noticed it the way I notice everything lately — while moving, while carrying, while mentally three things ahead of the room I’m in. I had not noticed it properly. Not the way it deserved. So after dinner, I sat with it. Asked her about it. Let her explain the pink sky and the dog that looked like a potato. She was pleased. I was relieved. I think one of the hidden sadnesses of adult life is how often beauty arrives into a room where you are too task-bound to receive it fully the first time.
