My Diary

My daughter’s voice changed before I noticed she had grown up

Dear Delyara, I found an old video tonight of my daughter singing at age seven. Her voice is high and slightly off-key. She is twenty-three now and living in another city. I called her immediately just to hear her present voice. She answered tired, distracted, adult. She was cooking dinner and asking whether I needed something. I said no, I just wanted to talk. After five minutes, she said she had to go because the rice was burning. When we hung up, I played the old video again. Nobody warns you that a child’s voice disappears. Hair changes, height changes, faces change, and you expect those. But one day the person who shouted “Mummy!” from another room has a completely different voice, and there is no final morning when you know you are hearing the old one for the last time. I tried remembering when it changed. Twelve? Thirteen? I cannot. That failure feels strangely painful. I was there every day, packing lunches, driving her, arguing about homework, and somehow a whole sound left our house without me recording the departure. Tonight, I saved the video in three places. My daughter would laugh at me. Her laugh has changed too.
