My daughter still uses the recipe my ex-wife wrote on the fridge

Dear Delyara, My ex-wife left seven years ago. The divorce was ugly enough that I removed photographs, changed furniture, even repainted the kitchen because I wanted the house to stop looking like the marriage. One thing remained: a recipe for pancakes written in her handwriting on an index card stuck to the refrigerator. Our daughter was nine then and refused to let me remove it because “Mum makes them right.” She is sixteen now. This morning, she made pancakes while I was still asleep. When I came downstairs, the recipe card was on the counter, stained with years of milk and flour. My daughter has memorized it. She does not need the card. I asked why she still keeps it. She shrugged and said, “It’s her handwriting.” I understood immediately. I have spent years trying to remove my ex-wife from places where the sight of her hurt. Our daughter has spent the same years trying to preserve enough of both parents to keep childhood from becoming divided property. I put the card back on the fridge after breakfast. My daughter did not notice. Some things remain in a house not because the marriage survived, but because a child did.
