My father learned how to say my husband’s name
Dear Delyara, My father struggled when I came out. He never disowned me, but he refused to call my husband my husband. For years, he said “your friend,” then eventually “Daniel.” Progress came in awkward inches. Last Christmas, Dad had a stroke that affected speech. During rehabilitation, the therapist asked him to practice names of family members. I was there when she showed him photographs. He said my sister’s name, my mother’s name, mine. Then she showed Daniel. Dad struggled for almost a minute. Finally, he said, “Son-in-law.” Not Daniel. Son-in-law. My husband was beside me and started crying. Dad looked annoyed because he hates emotional scenes. He repeated it more clearly. Gratitude sometimes arrives late and badly pronounced. My father spent years avoiding one relationship word and then fought a damaged brain to say it when speech itself had become difficult. I wish acceptance had come sooner. I am still grateful it came while we were all there to hear it.
